Gary Numan was supposed to have been playing his Replicas album... only he didn't play it at all like himself. I think he's become a little NIN obsessed - not that I can blame him for that, being the NIN obsessed looney that I am - but Gary Numan has his own fab style and that is what I wanted to see - not a watered down UK version of NIN.
Still - I should have expected NIN-Light. The set itself was almost a replica of the one NIN used at Brixton in their 2005 With Teeth tour... and the fact that instead of having a DJ / CD playing a mixed set before the show started, he just played NIN's Things Falling Apart album over the PA.
Fuck me! That's it! I just got it! Gary wasn't playing his Replicas album at all!! He was playing a watered-down replica of NIN! The Numanoid really has become a NINnie!
And not a good one either - big disappointment.
Also - what was with the ridiculous posturing?! I rarely take things too seriously as I feel life is there to be enjoyed - but all the dramatic poses and the 'look at me' gesturing that was going on just made me laugh - which was not the reaction I am sure Mr Numan had been after!
Sadly it was all a little too contrived for my liking. Just a license to print money really. I didn't get the impression that Numan was actually enjoying what he was doing. And on that note - what was up with the band? What a miserable bunch of buggers they were! Made NIN look positively cheery!
Would have been uber-pissed-off at the waste of money for the ticket and fuel to get there but for the fact that I really liked the support band - Robots In Disguise.
They have to be the BEST support band I have seen yet. They were lively, engaging, enthusiastic and belted out their tracks. And what's more - they seemed like they were having a really good time doing so. It was awesome to watch. I'd go back and see them again!
So not an entirely wasted journey. Keith and I got to spend time together with no kids in tow - plus we got to see a great support band!!
The Two of us at IndigO2... before Numan attempted to destroy our will to live!
Robots In Disguise... awesome support band!!
Numan's Replica of the NIN With Teeth 2005 set
Yes Mr Numan... we do want to see you crucified for this abomination!
The crowd were so enthusiastic about Numan's performance that some of them could barely stand to look at the stage at all!
